Overview

A sinus lift or sinus augmentation is a procedure required to place dental implants in case of bone loss when the patient does not have sufficient bone support. A sinus augmentation can give the patient the support they need.

This procedure increases the amount of bone in the upper jaw required for dental implants. It is one of the most common bone grafting procedures for dental implant patients.

FAQ

What is Sinus Augmentation (Sinus Lift)?

Sinus augmentation, also known as a sinus lift, is a dental procedure performed when there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw to support dental implants. It involves lifting the sinus membrane and adding bone graft material to increase bone height for successful implant placement.

Sinus augmentation is necessary when there is bone loss in the upper jaw, often due to tooth loss or anatomical factors that have led to inadequate bone volume for dental implants.

Sinus augmentation specifically targets the upper jaw’s bone deficiency to create a suitable foundation for dental implants. It involves lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material to stimulate new bone growth.

Before the procedure begins, you will be sedated and receive local anesthesia to numb the area. During the surgery, your dentist or oral surgeon will access the sinus cavity, lift the sinus membrane, and insert bone graft material. Over time, the graft material integrates with your existing bone, creating a stable foundation for dental implants.

Following sinus augmentation, you may experience some soreness and swelling for a few days. Your dentist will prescribe medications to manage discomfort and may recommend avoiding solid foods for a period to facilitate healing. Despite these initial effects, you can typically return to work immediately after the procedure.
